In 1990, a group consisting of choreographers: Sergiu Anghel, Raluca Ianegic, composers: Corneliu Cezar, Maia Ciobanu, and ballet teachers: Anca Mândrescu, Magdalena Bălan, and Liliana Zărnescu laid the foundations of higher choreographic education in Romania by establishing the first choreography section within the I.L. Caragiale National University of Theatre and Film in Bucharest. Meanwhile transformed into a Department of the Faculty of Theatre, it promotes study programmes for the first cycle of a bachelor’s degree: choreographic creation; for the second cycle of a master’s degree: choreographic art, respectively choreography and performance in dance (pedagogical studies); and for the third cycle: doctoral studies in the field of Theatre and Performing Arts. The graduates of these programmes are the artists who have transformed the entire field of dance art in Romania over the past three decades through their spectacular creations, the dance companies and schools they have founded, or the dancers they have trained.
In 2025, the I.L. Caragiale National University of Theatre and Film is organizing the International Conference on Creativity in Dance, the first scientific event in Romania dedicated to the art of choreography, marking the thirty-five years since the establishment of higher education studies in choreography.
The purpose of this conference is to provide an opportunity, at an academic level, for researchers, professors, and students to communicate the results of their studies, to interact directly with their colleagues, and to establish partnerships between universities for the development of joint research projects in the field of choreographic art. To encourage and support a wide range of approaches that stimulate creativity, the conference proceedings will follow in several directions: pre-lectures, debates, workshops, book launches, student creation presentations, and exhibitions.
By organizing this conference year after year, we hope it will become a benchmark among internationally organized academic events, inspiring both the academic world and professional artists everywhere.
