The topic of the workshop:
“During the workshop I’ll be sharing the Visible Thinking Body (VTB) practice, which I developed throughout the years during creation processes for all the dance performances I have done since 2013. With each project, new tools for generating movement were created in VTB that would appear out of necessity to resolve the conceptual questions specific to every project connected to theory and aware of their politics. The VTB tools are ways of navigating and thinking about the body in motion. What kind of thinking can be made visible in action, and how does it become a dance? With heightened attention to motion, departing from stillness and noticing the inner groove, the process starts with detecting the initiation of a movement and recognizing the personal drive to sustain it while guiding it towards imaginative dynamics. What moves us today? How do we stand, and what are we standing for? – are questions reflecting on the role of dance in our times, along the nature-culture-technology continuum.”
Sergiu Matis
Sergiu Matis is a Romanian choreographer living and working in Berlin since 2008. His works have been presented throughout Europe, and he has led workshops and educational activities at a range of institutions worldwide. His dance practice could be considered a relentless search through corporeal and digitalized archives in order to place a critical lens on what has been filed away, salvage what was presumed lost, and reinvent what was undocumented. The accumulation of history serves as an old map, which becomes a departure point towards the revelation of a new imagining of dance. His performances provoke intense experiences that fracture accepted ideas and embrace the complexities of our times.
